Best Family Accommodation Melbourne
Ovolo Laneways Melbourne Review
Address: 19 Little Bourke St, Melbourne
Room Types: Studio rooms, one/two bedroom suites, penthouse/terrace suites
Family Friendly Features:
- Close to Parliament Station and multiple tram lines
- Free lolly bar, breakfast, minibar, snacks on arrival and laundry
- Rooms include Apple TV and at least a kitchenette
Our favourite family accommodation, Melbourne city, has is the Ovolo Laneways. This funky hotel has many included extras which make it lots of fun.
Located at the top end of Little Bourke Street in the city centre, this hotel is very convenient to Parliament train station and many tram lines, including the city circle line. It’s also right by Chinatown for many delicious eating options or a short walk to Carlton or Fitzroy Gardens where the kids can run around, or you can visit the Melbourne Museum.
The hotel itself makes up for lack of facilities with many included extras. There is a free lolly bar, breakfast (which you can collect and eat in your room), free minibar, free snacks on arrival (called a loot bag) and free happy hour drinks. There is also a free laundry.
We find the lolly bar particularly useful with kids – it’s a good reward to keep them going when we are out sightseeing. They know they can have a lolly when we get back if they behave!

There is a range of family friendly apartments from studios for smaller families to two bedroom apartments to an amazing penthouse or terrace suites. We have stayed in three different types and they have all been great although there can be a lack of natural light in some rooms. Cots are available.
The terrace suites are definitely worth the extra price tag with plenty of space, an amazing terrace and full kitchen. All rooms come with Apple TV, at least a kitchenette, tea and coffee making, the included mini bar and everything you would expect from a top family friendly accommodation Melbourne.
Best Part?
The funky hotel and the little extras from the freebies mentioned above to little touches, like a welcome message on a blackboard in the hotel.
Worst Part?
Lack of natural light in some rooms and lack of facilities like a pool.
Overall?
If you are looking for Melbourne family apartments with a boutique hotel experience in a convenient location with fun extras and a funky environment, the Ovolo Laneways is perfect!

Family Friendly Features:
- Offers a kid themed bedroom (circus, racing car, jungle and super games)
- Nearby playground at Flagstaff Gardens

Another one of the best family hotels Melbourne has is the Pegasus Apart’Hotel.
While not cheap family accommodation Melbourne per se, we have found this option to be a more budget friendly option when you want accommodation in the CBD.
Located on the edge of the city near Flagstaff Gardens (where you can find a playground) and not far from Victoria Market, this hotel is convenient but a short walk or tram ride from the centre.
This child friendly accommodation Melbourne offers has some great facilities mainly thanks to the indoor pool. It’s nice and warm in winter, which makes this particularly a good place to stay in the colder months. There is also a gym, spa and a bar and restaurant downstairs. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast and happy hour drinks. There is also a self-service laundry.
There is a range of room types, but the two bedroom family apartments are definitely the winner for those looking for the best family accommodation in Melbourne. The apartments have small living, dining and kitchen areas as well as two bedrooms.

Sofitel Melbourne Review
Address: 25 Collins St, Melbourne
Room Types: A range of suites – classic, superior and luxury (connecting rooms available)
Family Friendly Features:
- Located near transport and Fitzroy and Carlton Gardens
- Luxury rooms with connecting rooms, cots and rollaway beds available
- Some rooms offer access to Club Sofitel (kids welcome)
If you are looking for class and luxury in a kid friendly accommodation Melbourne has then the Sofitel Melbourne is definitely a hotel to consider!
Located at the “Paris end” of Collins Street, this hotel has a great location by Parliament train station, many trams and Fitzroy and Carlton Gardens.
The hotel itself feels special from the moment you enter with a lobby at the bottom and then a ride up an elevator as the rest of the hotel starts at level 35! This means that there are some great views over Melbourne from this hotel.
There is a range of room types from their classic room which is a classier version of a standard king or twin hotel room to some great suites. Rollaways and cots are available for most room types.
We stayed in a Prestige Suite which had a sofa bed and a glorious corner location with views over much of Melbourne. Unfortunately, this is only available for families of three. With four, you can book connecting rooms with the second room half price.
It’s worth paying extra for a room with Club Sofitel access if you want a real treat. The Club Sofitel includes breakfast, afternoon tea and pre-dinner drinks and canapes. Kids are welcome.
Where this hotel is disappointing is there is no pool. Strange for a 5 star hotel! You can, however, use the pool at the Novotel just down the road.
The Sofitel does have a gym, and some top-rate eating and drinking options. However, they are suited better to adults than kids.
Best Part?
The unbeatable 5-star service and Club Sofitel.
Worst Part?
No pool and the lack of many options for families larger than three.
Overall?
If you are looking for luxurious child friendly hotels Melbourne, don’t mind not having a pool and have a smaller family, this is the perfect option!
